Problems with Grok
XXXXXXX
The vast majority of people my age want nothing to do with computers and they will certainly have no interest in AI. That’s unfortunate. Opticians
How many in the West will compare Israel’s behavior to the Russians, and with Hamas ‘fighters’ who refuse to surrender but are nonetheless taken alive. After Stalingrad, the Russians did not let anyone leave, and simply marched everyone east into Siberia, no matter the ideology. There they stayed in prison at least for 5, (and for the last tranche released), 13 years. That was Russians’ behavior, cruel but understandable — but that won’t be Israel’s way. Why? Because they are Jews… naturally. (And probably because they think they’re ‘chosen’. Grrr.)
Coming Attractions
I’ll be writing about my experiences with open AI’s, specifically ChatGPT and Grok. Sometimes I’ll be reviewing them; and sometimes simply reporting and recording my interactions with them, like notes from a lab experiment. I hope to write about how open AI might be managed effectively, from the underneath, as we upload tasks for it to perform and questions to answer. Finally, although my focus is the interface between brain, memory, medicine/psychiatry and the computer, I will always approach my writing tasks from a practical standpoint of looking for workarounds for the problems of getting older. Even tips.
Okay, we are all on the same page as to what is meant by AI, so let me tell you what’s coming. You know I’m interested in the interface between the brain, cerebral functioning, the digital world, and the computer. (I’m not one of those people who offer themselves up for experimentation — “Hey, you’re welcome to plant those electrodes and sensors in my cerebral cortex.” If anything, I’m more like the weirdo who can’t wait to plant *his* brain into his desktop’s CPU!)
In a sense, with my efforts to really learn how to understand my old MAC desktop (no longer even being made) works, in order to play it as an instrument, smoothly, as if a virtuoso. And I think it’s paying off, particularly when I find I am using Grok to help with tasks I never I would use it for,
s and expert-like. My other big motivation, relevant to these Substack postings, is that I’m an 82 year old psychiatrist, with a software background, who has been writing on SubStack, soon after retirement, since early 2021. Started doing that looking at ‘workarounds’ that use the computer for the problems of getting older.

Where I Am Right Now / An Update / Plans For the Future — right now I am very focus on openAI — define — review or report
Give this new more confident focus, I feel empowered to write about my interests, which encompass computers, the internet, and what we may expect in the future as we gradually (but increasingly) learn to use these epoch changing mental tools.
Although this Substack is (on its surface) an essay about the current endgame of the ongoing Gaza war; it’s also about AI, artificial intelligence, what it offers us. I believe we can effectively use it in the search of a more pragmatic and actionable kind of truth. Grok is an example of a ‘creature’ that comes with your computer or your mobile phone, (itself simply another tiny computer, with [much] less than 1% of its functionality involved in making calls). ‘OpenAI’ is the term I choose to describe both ‘Grok’ and ‘ChatGPT’, which I have been using for a number of months. I’m getting used to them, feeling increasingly comfortable, and finding more and more uses. Another description is ‘chatbots’, (robotic chat boxes?), which is accurate but falls short of conveying OpenAI’s aura or substance. There are a number of them already present in the market and more are coming. I believe they will have tremendous impact and part of the reason of my work in Substack will be report of my experience with them, why I think that the older we get, the more useful they are. The vast majority of people my age want nothing to do with computers and they will certainly have no interest in AI. That’s unfortunate. Opticians

If Grok and I have modified knee-jerk responses to images of suffering and horror coming from Gaza, amped by propaganda, into something more thoughtful and reasoned, then Grok and I have done our job.

i’m over 80, fully retired and yet here I am striking out a new career as journalist, logician, diarist and commenter… dealing in ideas but end up hawking nostrums for old people like myself, simply passing out ‘tips’ like how to set up visual memory posts in places where you spend your most time, like your own apartment. I don’t have a single motivation for this, I have many. Impressing people can be a motivator. Making a buck as well; I enjoy the process; I like doing it — but wait, maybe just one factor, a like ‘general positive feedback loop’ takes the place of 3 and 4.
Maybe ?????
